Babysitting Class: Toilet Paper Roll Maracas

Until just recently, I had the wonderful experience of being in charge of the teenage girls at our church's youth group. These girls were just reaching babysitting age and were always looking for ideas to keep little kids entertained. In order to help them be ready for babysitting we held a series of babysitting classes. We would teach the girls basic first aid, games to play with young kids and crafts that were easy and affordable to do with children. One of their favorite crafts, was making toilet paper roll maracas. All they need is the toilet paper rolls, paper, markers, glue, rubber bands and some beans.
First measure around the roll and then cut your paper to fit.
Then decorate.
Glue the paper onto the roll.
Place a small piece of paper around the end of the tube and secure with a rubber band. Place a handful of beans inside and then secure the other end of the tube with another piece of paper and rubber band.
We made sure to explain to the girls, that this craft is appropriate for children who are old enough to not stick the beans in their mouth and need to be at least 3-4. These simple craft, goes over well with young children for both the coloring part and the noise making part. It is the perfect craft for the young babysitter.

I think a babysitting class is such a marvelous idea! So many babysitters (myself included) run out of ideas after about ten minutes...
