Disney Vacation Memory Box

July 19, 2015 by Wifeeclectic 18 Comments

I received the vinyl for this project from Expressions Vinyl. I was not compensated for this post.

A few years ago I went to New York with my husband and my mom. We had a blast and I came home with a stack of ticket stubs, brochures, pictures and buttons. I didn’t know what to do with all of it, but I didn’t want to throw it away.

I came up with the idea of making a small box devoted specifically to the memories of that trip. A few years later I still love that box and it is so convenient to have everything all in one place. Out of the way if I need it to be, but easily accessible if I want to look at our memories. I knew I had created a family tradition β€” something small but easy to keep that we could look back on later.

This is our latest one, from our Disneyland trip earlier this year. I absolutely love how it turned out! It is a perfect representation of the trip and so easy to pull together.

You will need:

  • a flat wooden box
  • paint
  • foam brush
  • Mod Podge
  • a picture from your trip
  • mementos from your trip
  • black vinyl (I bought my from Expressions Vinyl, you can find it here.)
Paint your box in a coordinating color for your trip. Since Mickey Mouse is mostly red and black, I went with red since I knew that I wanted black Mickey heads. I painted the box both inside and out, but that is really up to you. Allow the box to dry completely. Mod Podge your favorite picture from the trip to the center of the lid. Add a coat of Mod Podge to the lid, then secure the picture on top, finishing it with another coat of Mod Podge. I like to use Mod Podge with a flat finish, but gloss would work too.

Do a Google image search for a Mickey Mouse head and trace it either in a design program like Silhouette Studio or Cricut Design Space, or by hand. Or you can go real simple and make one large circle and two smaller circles for the ears. Make larger and smaller versions of the head for the box. Cut the heads out with your vinyl machine or by hand. They are simple enough shapes that it should be fairly easy to cut by hand if you need to, but they go super fast on a machine.

Weed out the excess vinyl, leaving just the Mickey heads. Peel the Mickey Heads off the paper and stick in random places to the front of your box. Since they are such simple shapes, I don’t even use transfer tape, I just peel them like a sticker and stick them to a box. Use a credit card edge to smooth them completely down. Display on a coffee table, or line them up on shelf to be pulled out when you need a smile.

What is your favorite Disney memory?

I have teamed up with a huge group of bloggers to bring to you a large collection of vinyl ideas. Whether it be heat transfer or regular vinyl, we have you covered. Now that you have checked out my project, check out all of theirs.

Such a great idea! My husband has a box where he keeps ticket stubs, old itineraries, and hotel keys. But it is so disorganized since there are tons of trips all thrown into one box I like the thought of organizing it by trip!

We have a ton of momentos from our last trip to Disney World. I'd love to store them in a box like this for the kids to go through and remember our fantastic vacation.

What a great keepsake! My boys took their first Disney trip this summer, and this would be a great way to keep those things that I'd like them to have, but don't need daily access to…like their first visit pins. Thanks for sharing!
