Fried Pickles and other tailgating recipes

October 3, 2014 by Wifeeclectic 11 Comments

I love everything about fall. The leaves, the pumpkins, the football. Years ago, I never thought football would be included on that list, but I can truly say I love a good game and I love cooking for a game. A staple for watching football games in our house is as many fried foods as we can think of. We started making these a year or so ago and they are completely addictive. If you like pickles, you are going to LOVE these.

  • 1½ cups buttermilk
  • dill pickle chips for frying
  • 1 tablespoon  hot sauce
  • 1½ cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon  cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • oil for frying

Add the buttermilk and hot sauce to a shallow dish, Place the pickles in the dish in one layer, making sure to coat both sides. I like to use a cake pan so I have lots of room for pickles. Cover the dish and put in the fridge for 20 minutes. While your pickles are resting, combine the rest of the ingredients except the frying oil in a bowl. Stir together.

After 20 minutes, pull the pickles from the buttermilk and coat in the flour mixture, making sure to coat both sides. Return the pickles to the buttermilk and then coat in the flour mixture once more. Yes, do this step twice. Allow your pickles to rest for about 10 minutes. Fry in heated oil until crispy on both sides. There isn’t really a time frame since pickles vary so much in size, just watch until the pickles are a nice brown.

I have never tried fried pickles but these look great! The recipe looks wonderful and I bet I could make it gluten-free by using gluten-free flour. Thanks for the fun recipe!
