Ghostbusters Ecto 1 from a Cozy Coupe

Housewife Eclectic: Ecto 1 Cozy Coupe

Ever since our second child was born, my husband has been begging me to do a Ghostbusters Halloween. Well, this is the year! Ghostbusters is the show/cartoon my husband grew up on an loved. He was a Ghostbuster as a child for Halloween, and now we have come full circle. I warned my husband if we were going to do a Ghostbuster Halloween, we were going to do it my way. Which means, crazy and over the top. He agreed and well, I did warn him.

My favorite part of our family costume is our Ecto 1. We took a regular Cozy Coupe and turned it into the best mode of transportation any Ghostbuster could ask for. It wasn’t a hard project, it just took quite a bit of time for the paint to dry in between coats.

For the car itself

You will need:

  • A Cozy Coupe, preferably without eyes
  • Lots of white spray paint
  • red paint
  • Red and black vinyl (and a way to cut them)
  • making tape
  • Ecto 1 License plate printable (at the end of this post)

Look on yardsale sites and thrift stores for your car, there seems like there is always someone getting rid of one. I found mine for about $10. Clean the car really well, making sure to scrub in all the little crevices.

Tape off the steering wheel and the wheels.

Make sure to cover any parts of the car you don’t want to be turned white.

Then spray the car all over. In general, it took about four coats to get nice, even coverage on the car.

After your car is sprayed and dry. Add red paint to the tops of the doors.  Buy a Ghostbusters decal, or cut your own using red and black vinyl for each side of the car. Laminate the license plate printable at the end of this post and glue it to the front and back of the car to finish off the look.

You will need:

  • A 2-inch diameter PVC  pipe
  • 4 2- inch diameter PVC Caps
  • 1 – inch diameter PVC Pipe
  • 4 1-inch diameter PVC Elbows
  • Flex tubing
  • a blue flashing light
  • black spray paint
  • yellow spray paint
  • black long zip ties
  • command strips

Cut your smaller diameter PVC into two 12 inch sections and two 8 inch sections. Put the sections together using the elbows. It should rest on top of your car. If it is too large, trim down the PVC slightly.

Spray paint the PVC sections black.

Cut your 2-inch diameter PVC pipe into two 16 inch sections and cap them. Then spray paint them both yellow.

Add the yellow capsules to the black frame with zip ties. Then use command strips to secure the yellow tubes to the top of the car.  Zip tie the tubing to the yellow tubes and then use a command strip to secure the blue light to the top of the car as well.

Once you have done that, your car is ready to drive!

My little one is so excited that she gets to drive the car along with her costume! This is going to be an epic group costume!
