Harry Potter Photo Booth with a Cricut

We have been going a little Harry Potter nuts around here the last few months. Between building a Quidditch Pitch for our backyard and making Printable Hogwarts Letters we have done a little bit of everything. All of these fun projects have been leading up to one big event, my daughter’s birthday party. 8 is a special year in this house and so we have been going out of our way to make it something incredibly special.
One of my favorite parts of throwing a party is creating a photo booth so that my family will have lots of silly memories for years to come. I have created all of these really fun props for the party this week and they were SO easy to make!
 

Harry Potter Photo Booth

 
 

You will need:

  • felt
  • liquid starch
  • a Cricut ( have the Explore Air 2 and I love it!)
  • bamboo skewers
  • hot glue
  • freezer paper
  • fabric scissors
  • iron

 

 
I found the images for for these props all over the place. Some were images from Cricut Design Space, some were downloaded from the Noun Project and a few I made in Design Space itself. Here is a break down of where each image came from.

The other images can be found by downloading the image above and importing them into design space one at a time. The Mad Eye Moody goggle and the Deathly Hallows symbol were made directly in Design Space with simple shapes.

To make these, head over to the Explore site and select the great big blue, Create a New Project button. Save the image above to your computer and then hit the upload images button and upload the this image you found. Select whether the image is a simple image, moderately complex image or complex image. This image, especially since you are just tracing the simple outlines would be considered a simple image. Simple images are the easiest to trace so look for an image with high contrast colors. Insert them into design space and move them around until you have them where you like them.

Make your images different colors and your Cricut will know that you plan on cutting them out of different colors and place them on different mats when you hit cut.  Put a sheet of freezer paper shiny side down on a light stick Cricut mat. The light stick mat will help make sure that that your paper doesn’t rip when you pull it off the mat.  Set your machine to wax paper and then hit the go button.

Once the all of the pieces have been cut out, weed off the excess freezer paper. Place the shiny side down on the felt and use a warm iron to adhere the freezer paper to the felt.

Use a good pair of scissors and cut out the felt around the freezer pattern. Once everything is cut out, peel off the freezer paper.

Fill a small container with with liquid starch. Dip the entire piece of felt into the starch, making sure it is completely saturated. Do not wring out the felt as this will distort it, instead pinch it between two fingers, sliding the fingers towards the container to get rid of the excess starch. Lay the felt out to dry for at least 24 hours.

Once the felt is dry, hot glue a skewer to the back of it.

Add all of the pieces to a jar or a vase and you have one amazing set of props for a photo booth.

 

My daughter couldn’t wait to try some of them out. I think we are going to have a blast at the party with them!

    Photo booths are a perfect addition to any party. We love Harry Potter and are reading them with my 8 year old daughter. We'll defiantly be incorporating this into our next Harry Potter viewing party!

    This is a great idea for my Harry Potter lover! Now would this be reason enough to buy a Cricut? I have been wanting one but I know I don't have the time.
