Harry Potter Sorting Hat Cupcakes

It is something that every Harry Potter fan has thought about. What house would I be in at Hogwarts?

These fun and easy Harry Potter Sorting Hat Cupcakes are the perfect treats for any Harry Potter party! Simply let your guests bite into their cupcakes to find out their house!

Butterbeer Frosting

You will need:

  • 2 sticks of softened butter
  • 4 TBS butterscotch sauce (find this by the ice cream)
  • 1/2 C. Brown Sugar
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. butter extract
  • 7 c. powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons milk

Mix the butter, butterscotch sauce, sugar, vanilla, and butter extract together until well whipped. While mixing, add the powdered sugar 1-2 cups at a time, mixing all the time. Mix the milk into the frosting to get the right consistency.

Harry Potter Sorting Hat Cupcakes

You will need:

  • chocolate cupcakes
  • butterbeer frosting
  • circle cookie cutter
  • M&Ms in red, green, yellow and blue
  • piping bag and tip (if you want to pipe the frosting onto the cupcake)

Harry Potter Sorting Hat Cupcakes

Separate the M&Ms into four piles. Red for Gryffindor, green for Slytherin, blue for Ravenclaw and yellow for Hufflepuff. Use the cookie cutter to cut out a circle in the top of each cupcake, saving the part you remove.

Harry Potter Sorting Hat Cupcakes

Add M&Ms for one of the houses to each cupcake and then replace the circle of cake. Frost the cakes with Butterbeer frosting.

Sorting Hat Toppers

You will need:

  • Tootsie Rolls

Unwrap three small Tootsie Rolls per sorting hat. Place them in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave them for 5-10 seconds. You only want to warm them up a little, not melt them, so watch them closely.

Roll the tootsie rolls together in your hand until they are smooth. Pinch off a part of the tootsie roll and roll it out. Use the cookie cutter you used to cut the cupcake to cut out a circle for the bottom of the hat. Pinch off a small piece and set to the side. Mold the rest of the Tootsie Roll into a cone and then curve the top. Use the small pinch to create the face for the sorting hat.

Place a Sorting Hat on top of each cupcake.

    4 stars
Just made these, unlike most of the reviewers here.

I’d say the concept is awesome, and the hat with tootsie rolls is the best looking option on the internet. Good job with that.

One improvement would be to make the frosting a lighter, fluffier buttercream. This one is THICK and sugary.
