Gardening is a hobby many people enjoy. You get to spend time outside, make a mess in the soil, and watch the fruits of your labors grow and thrive – literally! If you have a garden outside your house, a couple hours in it every day could make all the difference between untamed wilderness and a dash of paradise. Think of all the BBQs you can host now!
However, for some people gardening is one of the worst activities in the world. it’s messy, there’s so much to do, you can get a lot wrong, and that can make your hard work turn into nothing when your plants fail to flower. All that time and energy and it seems to go to waste when nature decides it wants to be a cruel mistress!
But if you’re bothered by the way your backyard looks, and you want your garden to be functional this year, you’re going to need to get out there with a pair of shears and gardening gloves on. Don’t worry – with the tips below, we’re going to help make the ordeal a lot more fun for you!
Buy Cute Garden Ornaments
The cuter the ornament, the more it belongs in your garden! If you find gardening a bit boring and/or difficult because there’s not much to look at (the plants need time to grow, after all), make sure you decorate the space in other ways.
You can have a lot of fun with buying garden gnomes and other little porcelain, wood, or ceramic decorations that are perfect for putting outside. Just make sure you don’t trip over and smash them when you’re going round with your shovel or rake!
Indeed, you can even create a full feature garden through the use of ornaments. Once your plants have grown into the space you’ve left for them, you could end up with a little magical fairy scene!
Plant Whatever You Like the Look of
You don’t need to have a cohesive garden! You can have one filled with life and color by simply buying whatever seeds, saplings, or sprouts you like and then popping them into the ground or your planter beds. It’s your garden – that means it plays by your rules!
If you’ve always hated the idea of designing a garden because you’re not sure what looks good together or will work best when growing together, throw that whole idea out of the window. You can have fun just by picking and choosing what looks good, and you can learn a lot about getting the plants to thrive along the way.
Don’t think your garden has to look as ‘pretty’ or ‘structured’ as those you see on TV. Have fun with plant picking and placement and you’ll soon come to love your outdoor space.
Don’t Waste Time on Mundane Tasks
Mundane tasks are the worst when you’re trying to parent and keep a clean house at the same time! Indeed, you could say that any cleaning task is pretty mundane, but we’re talking about the most boring and energy sucking things on the to-do list!
Getting rid of that leaf pile in the yard, for example, or having to put the vacuum round three times a day because of all that pet dander. These tasks build up and make life so much worse to live!
That’s why you should invest in equipment like a battery leaf blower you don’t have to plug in and lug around, as well as a special dog hair brush that easily can be used as and when you spot a clump of fur.
Make a Space to Relax
Gardens are for spending some relaxing time in. Even working gardens, covered in grow bags filled with tomatoes and trellises for grapes to wind up, can have a space for rest and relaxation somewhere in the corner.
For most people this means putting up a deck or patio and covering it in furniture and sheltering it under a gazebo, but you can also place deck chairs in a messy, soily space and recline there as well.
As long as you feel like you can relax, and there’s somewhere to rest your drink, with a bit of shade from the all day sun beating down on you, you’ve got a worthy space to spend some time just luxuriating in your own outdoor space.
Place Wildlife Feeders in Front of the Windows
Want to watch birds and squirrels climb up the feeders and take the nuts and the suet out? Then place the feeders near your windows and watch out of them when the season is right. The more you see wildlife in your garden, the more you’re going to love it for the wild and beautiful place it can be.
Even though you’re cutting back bushes and whacking down the brambles, you can still encourage critters to call it their home by making food an easy reward for visiting. Of course, you can keep bigger animals like raccoons out with a few nifty tricks (if you’re worried they’re going to steal all the food), but you can then watch the less nocturnal wildlife feeding during the day.
Spend a Little More on Pre-Built Items
Don’t want to cut some wood into planks and put a planted bed together? Think that’ll be arduous and boring? Then you don’t have to do it! You can buy a pre-built one and simply pop that up in the garden instead.
Cut out a little bit of the work you dread by spending a bit more money and you’ll find gardening a lot more pleasurable in the future. Really, this is a great way to make life simpler!
A wild backyard doesn’t have to prevent you from enjoying your garden, even if you hate actually having to garden! You can have a bit of fun in clearing it out with tips and tricks like these – just make sure you don’t do it all at once and overwhelm yourself.
