Homemade Taco Seasoning

February 5, 2013 by Wifeeclectic 2 Comments

About a year ago, I started a mission to stop buying so many pre-made things at the store. My goal was only to buy raw ingredients and then turn them into what I needed. During this time, I started making my own taco seasoning, Italian dressing mix and cream of chicken soup mix. I have loved the results. This recipe for Taco seasoning is easy and I had all the spices already on hand.

You will need:
2 Tablespoons Chili Powder
1/2 teaspoon Garlic Powder (if you love garlic or onion, I would add a full teaspoon)
1/2 teaspoon Onion Powder
1/2 teaspoon Red Pepper
1 teaspoon Paprika
2 teaspoons Salt
2 teaspoons Pepper

Mix all of the ingredients together.

When I am making tacos with ground beef, I brown 1 lb of beef and then add 1/2 cup of water and a tablespoon or so of the mix. How much mix you use depends on how much seasoning you like on your tacos. I also like to add a teaspoon of cornstarch or flour to help the seasonings stick to the meat.

How much does this yield? More than will fit in one average sized spice container? I am terrible with volume 🙂 but I'd love to make this after we finish off our ginormous Costco bottle of seasoning 🙂
