It seems like every week I am hearing about a new kind of diet. From Keto to intermittent fasting, it seems I regularly have friends swearing by one type of eating or another.
To be honest? I have tried a lot of these plans and programs. I have tried programs where you eat specifically packaged meals and programs where you eat a very selective kind of diet. I have had varying degrees of success with each of these programs but afterward, the weight almost always came back. Why? Even though I was changing my diet, I wasn’t changing my attitude towards food.
Over the last six months, I have lost 30 pounds. I was thrilled, determined to keep it off and ready to start a new chapter in my life. My doctor adjusted a medication for my chronic condition and —boom—15 pounds jumped back on my body in less than a month. I was so frustrated, but it was also an eye-opening moment for me. I needed something that wouldn’t change my day, my week or a month. I needed something that would change my life. This is when I finally signed up for Noom. I had eyed the program previously and finally decided it was what I needed to make a change.
What is Noom?
Noom isn’t a diet. It’s a wellness program. It doesn’t just want to help you make the number on the scale drop; it wants to help you feel better all over. It wants to help you make sustainable life changes. The program focuses so much on the mental part of getting healthy, which I absolutely love.
I don’t know about you, but losing weight is often a mental game for me and I love that Noom gives me the tools to get over those barriers. Noom doesn’t make any foods off limits, but it helps you see the value of some food and the calories of others.
How do you get started with Noom?
With Noom, the first thing you will do is take a quick assessment. This assessment takes into account how much you weigh, your ideal weight, a few questions about your lifestyle, and questions about any significant health problems you may have. Now will then email you the results of your assessment and detail how Noom can help you.
Using Noom to Lose Weight
If you are looking to lose weight with Noom (they also have a Diabetes management program), it will set up a specific calorie limit and you will use the app to help you track your food consumption.
Food tracking is never my favorite thing but I love how upfront and honest Noom is about it. They talk about how calorie tracking is not a forever thing but a necessary thing to help you see where you are at and what things need to change. I honestly had no idea how many Diet Dr. Peppers I was drinking a day until I started tracking it.
Noom separates food into three different groups by how water dense they are (the water density concept was totally new and fascinating to me!).
- Green foods are less calorie dense than other foods. They include fruits, veggies, and whole grains.
- Yellow foods have more calories than green and include lean meats, legumes, and lower-fat dairy.
- Red foods are the most calorie dense and include foods such as red meats and desserts. Red doesn’t necessarily mean bad though. It should just raise a flag in your head about the calories you are consuming. The program isn’t about cutting cookies out but making sure they aren’t a huge part of your diet.
Noom for people with Celiac
As someone with Celiac, it can be so hard to find a program that works. I already have so many foods I can’t eat, that when a program limits food, I start to feel like I am starving. Noom is seriously the best program for people with Celiac that I have found. Since you are eating foods you already know and love, you are open to prepare foods you can eat already. You don’t have to try and make any substitutions because Noom works perfectly on a gluten-free diet. Since it focuses on shifting to healthier foods, you can just make sure you are selecting healthier gluten-free foods.
Support on Noom
The support on Noom is 100% the reason I think people are so successful with this program. Every person has a weight loss specialist they can reach out to. You can reach out more if you are needing the support or less. If group support is more your thing, join one of Noom’s groups and gain your support that way. The groups are the perfect place to reach out for ideas when you want healthy meal ideas or just someone to hold your hand while it is hard.
The weight loss specialists are also perfect for an introvert like me. I can be as involved with them as I want to be or pull away if I want to as well. What works well for me? I make sure I get notifications from my coach on my phone and one of my goals is to always answer her. It keeps my motivation up while not even leaving my house. I also love that I can get motivation daily if I need it.
Lemon Fruit Dip
This dip is one of my favorite Noom recipes. It is meant to be a dessert or snack but is a great way to incentivize eating fruit!
- 1- 8 oz package for cream cheese (softened)
- 2 T. Lemon Juice
- 1/4 C. Brown Sugar
Mix all of the ingredients together until smooth. Serve with apples, strawberries, and other fruit.

Recipes
One of the most fabulous parts of the Noom app is the recipe section. Feeling stumped on what to make? Look through the recipes with mouth-watering pictures to help you find a great meal for dinner and stay in your calorie budget! It gives you an overview of each recipe, the instructions on how to make it, and a breakdown of the nutrition of the recipe. It really helps you make delicious and healthy decisions.
Noom also has a huge database with more than 3.7 million options so you can enter your own favorite recipes and look up foods at your favorite restaurant chains.
Learning
One of my favorite parts of the Noom app is continued learning. They don’t just send you on your way until the next check in, they give you concise and easy-to-understand information to help you figure out this journey to a healthier you. Noom also realizes people need to live their life. The program helps you take into account special occasions and eating too.
Weigh-Ins
One thing people are always nervous about a weight loss program is weigh-ins. Noom recommends you record your weight every day. Why? It helps to keep you motivated! I hated it at first, but it is so good for me to see little problems before they become bigger ones.
Dietician Recommended
Over and over again, Noom is the program my dietician friends recommend. It focuses on changing your life not just your food for a little while, which is what they have been pushing me to do all along.
I am seeing results with Noom, results just from the basic principles of the program. I am down almost 10 pounds! And this time I feel like it is for life.
This program is the perfect resource to not only lose weight but to help me change my life.
