Today is the second post in my St. Patrick’s Day mantel series. What do rainbow tutus have to do with my mantel? This year I wanted to be able to include a few pictures of my St. Patrick’s Day mantel, but I wanted them to match the mantel, so I created these super simple tutus for my girls to take pictures in. They love the tutus and the pictures turned out just so darn cute!
You will need:
- Six colors of tulle (red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple)
- Elastic
- Needle and thread or safety pin
- Scissors
I wanted the tutus to have a little bit of glitter, but not be overwhelmingly glittery, so I bought only one of the colors in a glitter tulle and it was absolutely the perfect amount of glitter. I bought the yellow in glitter so it would look like a gold glitter on the other colors.
Measure around your child’s waist and cut a piece of elastic that size. It doesn’t need to be bigger because it will stretch out a bit. Sew the ends of the elastic together or if sewing isn’t your thing, you can glue or safety pin it together. I like to sew it, so I know it is going to stay put.
Cut strips of tulle, about 40 inches long. This made a floor length tutu on my toddler and a tee length tutu on my 7-year-old. I cut about 12 strips of each color to make a full tutu.
Fold a tulle strip in half to make a loop, place it on one side of the elastic and then wrap the ends of the loop up and around and pull it through the loop to make a knot. Repeat over and over until you have the entire tutu.
I paired the darling tutu with these fun sequin head bands that I found at the dollar store. These little ones just look so darling!
Do you ever take photos for specific holidays?
Those are so cute. I have all boys, so there are no tutus here. Maybe when my nieces are older they will want one of these 🙂
Those are super cute!! I might be able to make these myself. Notice I said might. 😉 Thanks for sharing!
I am living for these super duper gorgeous rainbow tutus! I love the ST Patrick Day reference too great job!
I'm curious as to what type of elastic you used for these tutus. I've tried using elastic before but just couldn't find the right kind for it to work right. These are adorable!
Love the multi color tutu! They are so easy to make too.
Oh how cute. I would love to learn how to make these!
That is the cutest thing ever. My daughter loved tutus of all colors when she was younger.
Oh my cuteness! I only have little boys but this would be fun to make for some of the little ladies in my life!
My daughter had one of these when she was about 2-3, she loved it! She wore it so much that I ended up having to throw it away, but I know she would love another one. I might have to go out and get the supplies this weekend!
How cute! Your girls are adorable. Thank you for sharing this. I want to make tutus for the twins.
The last tutu I made was for the fall. I used brown/orange combo. Little girls look so cute in their tutus!
I love the rainbow tutus! They remind me of the green crepe-paper tutus that I wore in second grade (eons ago) for a St. Patrick's day show in school. Your version would put our old-school ones to shame.
I love it! I actually need to look into making my first tutu for my little girl. Hopefully when I do, it will turn out as cute as yours!
Very cute tutus! I have two nieces who would really love rainbow colored tutus. I really like that you're doing a St Patricks Day theme that matches your mantel. what a cute idea 🙂
These are so cute – the tutus and your girls! What a cute idea for St. Patrick's day!
These are super adorable! Its a great way to get into the spirit of the holiday for sure
