Candy Cane Cookies

These easy peppermint cookies are some of our favorites. My kids love helping crush the candy canes and then rolling the dough in them, there is something for even little hands to do when you are making these cookies!

Ingredients

  • a Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie Mix
  • a stick of butter
  • eggs
  • candy canes
  • peppermint candies
  • rolling pin
  • red food dye

Instructions

  • Mix up your cookie mix with the egg and butter according to the package directions.
  • Unwrap you candy canes and place them in a plastic bag.
  • Using a rolling pin or a rubber mallet, smash the candy canes into tiny pieces.
  • I am pretty sure this step is half the reason my kids love baking with me at Christmas time.
  • Split you dough into two equal sections.
  • Add red food coloring to one section and work it into the dough until you like the color.
  • For each cookie, take a pinch of the sugar cookie dough and a pinch of the red cookie dough and lightly roll them together.
  • After they are rolled together, roll some of the cookies in the crushed candy cane bits and leave some to top with chocolate peppermint candies after the cookies bake.
  • Place all of the cookies on an ungreased baking sheet and put them in the fridge for a couple of hours. Something about the candy cane bits make these cookies spread too much, so chilling them for a little while helps help them turn out perfect.
  • Bake the cookies according to the package.
  • Once the cookies are baked, pull them out of the oven.
  • Let them cool for about 5 minutes and then add a chocolate peppermint to each cookie, or if you like them extra chocolate-y like we do, add one candy, let it melt and then top it with another.
