I have been compensated by JOHNSON’S® Baby for this post; however, I am sharing my own thoughts. All opinions are my own.
There are two things I believe strongly about our nightly bath time routine. #1 A baby washed and lotioned with JOHNSON’S® products is how a clean baby is SUPPOSED to smell and #2 hooded towels are the best way to snuggle and dry your baby after a bath. JOHNSON’S® baby shampoo, baby lotion, and a fluffy hooded towel are three of my biggest mommy must-haves when it comes to taking care of my kids.
All growing up my mom used JOHNSON’S® on all of my younger brother’s and sisters and now it what I use in my home. I love them because they are constantly researching what is best for our little ones and eliminating ingredients based on that research. They work with scientists, pediatricians, dermatologists, and nurses to make sure all of their products are just what your little one needs. JOHNSON’S® Baby Shampoo is still my go-to for my older daughter. She has crazy sensitive skin and this shampoo doesn’t irritate it at all while still getting her beautiful hair clean.
I also love JOHNSON’S® BEDTIME® bath and lotion to help wind my kids down and get them ready for bed. A warm bath with these lavender products is always just what my kids need to feel sleepy and ready for bed. I love pulling my kids out of the tub and wrapping them in a big hooded towel before rubbing them down with baby lotion and getting them dressed for bed.
The really big and fluffy hooded towels are the best and since they can be so hard to find, I started making them myself! This darling Flamingo is the perfect towel for any kid and you can easily grab the supplies to make it and all of your favorite JOHNSON’S® products at Walmart or even make your life a little easier by ordering using in-store pickup!
DIY Flamingo Hooded Towel
You will need:
- A large pink towel
- A pink hand towel
- A black hand towel or washcloth
- A white hand towel or washcloth
- Good scissors
- A sewing machine
- The printable pattern found at the end of this post
Take your pink hand towel and fold it in half.
Cut the towel along the fold. You will use one part to make the hood and the other part to make the wings.
For the hood: Fold the long finished side of the towel in a couple inches and sew in place. Now you will need to make your embellishments and sew them onto the hood before you sew the hood onto the towel.
The Beak
Lay the beak pattern on the towel and cut along the rounded edge leaving about a half inch of extra fabric on top to allow for the seam. Repeat.
Turn the rounded edge under and hem. Repeat for the second piece.
Lay the black piece with the hem about an inch from the bottom of the white piece and topstitch it in place. Repeat for the second piece.
Lay your two pieces, right sides together with the curves matching and pin. Lay the pattern piece on top of the towels with the curve on the white side and the point on the black. Pin in place.
Sew around your pattern piece, leaving the widest part open so you can turn the beak right side out.
Trim around the entire beak, about a half inch from the seam.
Turn the beak right side out.
Turn the unfinished edges inside the beak a half inch or so. Pin it in place on the hood, and sew around the top part of the beak, just from one end of the turned-under section to the other.
The Wings
Lay the wing pattern on top of two layers of towel or a layer of towel and a layer of fabric and sew around. Leave the widest part open to flip the wing right side out.
Cut around the wings and then flip them right side out. Sew up the hole in the wing.
Sew your buttons on your hood.
Sewing the Hood to the Towel
Now you are ready to sew your hood to your towel. In order to help your towel “hug” your child a little bit better, you will first sew a box pleat into your towel. They are really easy! To start, fold your towel in half, wrong sides together.
Pinch the towel about two inches down from the top and push the pinch down.
Flatten the fold and pin in place. Match up your hood and your pin pleat, wrong sides together and pin. Sew the hood and the towel together which will also finish off your pleat! Take out your pins and snip your threads and you have an adorable Flamingo Towel!
I love to lotion my little ones with JOHNSON’S® Baby Lotion right after their bath to help lock in the moisture and then I wrap them up in these big hooded towels and read them stories before getting them in their jammies. It is such a wonderful part of our nightly routine and really helps them be ready to sleep at night.

I love all things Flamingo and the hooded towel is adorable! And, I completely agree that a clean baby should smell like Johnson’s. That’s all I used when my children were growing up and that clean scent always reminds me of when they were little.

Oh I love Johnson’s products and used mostly all of them for my son when he was a babe and a toddler. In fact, I still use the lotion for him when he’s dry and for myself. That lavendar lotion was a miracle for us when he had colic!

I have made different hooded animal towels over the years for the grandkids. Doesn’t everyone use Johnson and Johnson for bath time. Especially when they are babies and toddlers.
