We are that family. Halloween is almost a religion in our house. It didn’t use to be. I have never liked dressing up for Halloween and stopped the second I couldn’t go trick-or-treating, then when our first daughter was born everything changed. She is obsessed with Halloween. You could take away Christmas, but don’t you dare think about messing with Halloween. She begged us to dress up with her as the Avengers a few years ago and we actually had a ton of fun. Since then, I spend more than a month prepping our family costumes.
This year, Star Wars Costumes. I am being Darth Vader, my older daughter is being Ashoka, the younger daughter R2D2 and my husband is being Obi One. Twice now I have gone back to the drawing board with his Jedi costume and now I think we finally both love it. It is a combination of thrift stores and Costume SuperCenter.
For this costume you will need:
- Tan pant
- Tan long sleeve shirt, I bought a button up but you could use any variety
- 2.5 yards of muslin
- wide brown belt
- Jedi Robe
- Light Saber
- Fake Hair or wig
- Hair clip
The tan pants and tan shirt were the easy part for me. I picked up both for a couple of bucks at a thrift store. The belt is also a thrift store purchase but it took a couple weeks of looking, so start early. Buy two and a half yards of muslin and serge the edges so it doesn’t fray. The muslin goes on over top of the shirt, kind of as a wrap. Use the belt on top to secure it down. Braid a long braid out of fake hair. I found it was cheapest to buy a wig and braid a section and then cut it off from the rest of the wig. Secure the braid to the clip. The braid isn’t shown in this photo because I had just cut my husband’s hair and so the clip wouldn’t stay, but it will on Halloween! Boots are a tricky part of this costume, you can find a pair at a thrift store and spray paint them brown, boot covers are another great option or you can go ahead and splurge on the Jedi boots. We are obsessed with Halloween, so guess which option we picked. 😉
After looking and looking for hooded Jedi robe patterns, I decide to purchase that part of the costume and I am so glad I did. The robe is absolutely perfect. It has the wide sleeves and a great length. It is light weight, so it doesn’t get too hot, but it isn’t see through either. It is the perfect combination. I love the material it is made out of, I had planned on using a smooth material and this isn’t smooth, it really seems like the kind of material you expect a Jedi cloak to be made out of.
We also picked up a light saber, since I am no Jedi and can’t make my own. It matched the costume perfectly and completes the ensemble. If the Dark Side is more you thing you can also pick up a Darth Vader or Storm Trooper costume too!
Which Star Wars character would you be for Halloween?
That is so awesome! We love Star Wars.
So excited for the new Star Wars movie. The costume you created is spot on. Obi Wan would be honored.
That is a really unique and creative Halloween costume. I'm going to send this link to my daughter, her and her hubby always dress for Halloween at the parties they host and are invited to.
That is such an awesome costume. I think my husband would be into it.
