We took our kids to see My Son Pinocchio on Hale’s Jewel Box Stage last week and it was absolutely incredible! My younger daughter is 4-years-old and has been begging to go to a real play for almost a year. Normally Hale Centre Theatre has a minimum age of five, but they have lowered it to three for this special family show! We are so glad they did. Both of my daughters were mesmerized from start to finish.
This production of My Son Pinocchio has famous songs from the original Disney movie including I’ve Got No Strings, When You Wish Upon a Star with additional music from Wicked composer, Stephen Schwartz. Instead of following the traditional movie script, this version of the play takes us through the Pinocchio’s journey, all through the eyes of Geppetto.
It was absolutely the perfect first play for my girls. It is bright, colorful and features a lot of fun and talented child actors.
“Pinocchio is a family musical that tells the story of a father and son learning to accept each other, flaws and all,” said Sally Dietlein, HCT Vice President. “And Hale Centre Theatre has a few tricks up its sleeve with eye-popping set pieces and stage props.”
The set pieces and costumes are absolutely stunning in this production. My girls are still talking about how beautiful the Blue Fairy’s dress was when it was all lit up. It was funny and clever and my kids who have sadly never seen the original movie (we will remedy that soon!) Loved it!
A little more about this show:
In this classic story, Geppetto the woodcarver creates a wooden puppet he names Pinocchio. After Geppetto wishes upon a star that Pinocchio would become a real living, breathing boy, the dazzling Blue Fairy grants his wish. But parenthood is not as easy as Geppetto dreamed it to be. Pinocchio struggles to live up to being “the perfect son” and runs away, leaving Geppetto heartbroken and searching to find him. When faced with the possibility of never seeing Pinocchio again, thanks to the evil Stromboli, Geppetto learns what it means to love his child unconditionally.
“Pinocchio is written to entertain children, but there are very beautiful, smart and profound truths that are layered into the story,” said Dave Tinney, producer of My Son Pinocchio: Geppetto’s Musical Tale. “There are 18 kids performing in the show between the two casts, ranging from eight to 12 years old, and they are as professional as the adults. The difference between the two seems to only be age and sometimes, stature. Our child actors haven’t lost their belief in the magic of pretending and are truly little pros! It’s a delight to see such a young cast put on such an admirable show.”
