I have seen a ton of posts floating around Pinterest for Sharpie mugs and lots of frustrated posts by people who tried out the method and couldn’t make it work. While it can work if you use the Oil-Based Sharpies, I have found the best method is to use porcelain paint pens. These pens are easily set by baking your decorated items in your home oven and last over being washed many times.
You will need:
- Pebeo Porcelain Paint Pens, you can find some here.
- Stickers or other decorations to dot around
- An Oven
For this decoration, I took a set of stickers and placed them on the cup, giving a surface to dot around. After I finished the decoration, I simply peeled the the stickers off the cup and finished the design. After you finish your design, in order to make it resistant to the dishwasher first air dry your design for 24 hours. After 24 hours is up, bake your design in an 150 degree oven for about 35 minutes.
There are quite a few different brands of paint pens, I just personally prefer Pebeo because I have used it with good success in the past, and no, this isn’t sponsored, just my opinion. If you use another brand of paint pen, just make sure you read the baking instructions for those individual pens.
I used this method for the first time almost four years ago, and the mugs are still holding strong. What would you write on a mug?
That's a cute idea!
This is good to know! I've tried this before, but I didn't bake it. Now I know! Thanks!
I've seen it on Pinterest a lot but never tried it. Thanks for sharing a way for it to last. I think they're so cute. Pinning!
I like this idea a lot. We just found a box of mugs that are in need of a face lift. Maybe I'll do this with Dax this afternoon.
Very cute!! I've been wanting to try this!
I had a sharpie fail too! I have used DecoArt markers though and they worked really well. I love the idea of tracing and dotting around stickers. Thanks for the inspiration!
I'm so glad you shared the trick for these. I've seen the frustrated people, so I've never tried. I'll have to give it a go.
Thanks for the tips! I have always wanted to try it, but have heard a lot of bad experiences with it. I will just have to give it a try though!
