Large Luck Watercolor

February 23, 2016 by Wifeeclectic 13 Comments

I had a completely different plan for the centerpiece of my St. Patrick’s Day mantel this year when my 7-year-old asked to help. The original plan wasn’t something she could help with, so I decided to go with something she could. We made this large water color together and it was an absolute blast. I love watching her look up at the mantel and smile too. It was fun, easy and it looks fantastic on the mantel.

You will need:
  • a large frame
  • posterboard or watercolor paper
  • masking tape
  • water colors

You need a heavier kind of paper for this project so you can peel the masking tape off of it when you are done. I used the matte side of a piece of poster board and peeled slowly and it worked fantastically!
Measure the size of your frame and cut your posterboard to size. Using masking tape mark off what you want left white when you are done with the watercolor. We went with the word luck.
Staring from the left fill in the entire poster board with rainbow colors. Make sure you paint all the way to the top and all the way to the bottom and around the masking tape letters. Allow the watercolor to dry completely and then slowly peel off the masking tape, revealing white poster board underneath.

I framed the watercolor and it sits in the middle of our mantel at the moment. I love that we made it together and my daughter is SO proud of it!

Are you decorating for St. Patrick’s Day this year?

LOVE this! I am adding this to my programming for my day home kiddos. This is such an easy craft but it turns out so nicely. The kids are going to love it! I can't believe how close we are to St. Patricks day…man the time sure is flying!

What a great idea to use masking tape to make letters for a painting! I love how this came out, and definitely am going to try it with my kids – they love to paint!

This is really cute! I love how you included your daughter in the decorating! It reminds me of the artwork my nephew made for me when he was one. My sister taped off an "H" (for my new last name at the time) and let him paint all over the canvas. It made me tear up when I got it in the mail for Christmas – especially when I realized my dad had helped her add the paw prints of my dog to the canvas. It's hanging on my wall.
