“Soft Kitty” Dalek T-Shirt

June 20, 2016 by Wifeeclectic 24 Comments

If you are a fan of the Big Bang Theory, than you probably know the song “Soft Kitty.” It is the song Sheldon likes to be sung to him when he is sick. Since I am a fan of The Big Bang Theory and a Doctor Who fan, I couldn’t help but combine the two into a fun shirt for my daughter to wear this summer. We changed up the words to the song and ended up with this fun version that of course ends with Exterminate!

You will need:

  • a T-shirt( I used pink, but use whatever color you want)
  • contrasting heat transfer ( I used silver)
  • an iron
  • a Cricut or other way to cut the vinyl

To make this shirt, head over to the Explore site and select the great big blue, Create a New Project button.

I did a Google image shirt for the Dalek, you can find the image I used here. Upload it to Cricut Design Space by selecting the upload image button. Your image should be pretty simple so select the simple image button. Make sure only the Dalek and no surrounding white space is selected and then insert it into your post. Add your words to the mat as well. The words are:

Hard Dalek,
Cold Dalek,
Little Ball of Hate.
Evil Dalek,
Angry Dalek,
Exterminate

My letter are each about a half inch high and the entire back design is about 6 inches tall by 5 inches wide.

When you hit cut, it will ask you how many you plan to make, so if can plan your mats accordingly. It will groups the different color items onto different mats because it assumes you want to cut them out with separate colors. Make sure to check the mirror image box since we are cutting out heat transfer.

After you hit Go and cut out your vinyl, weed out the excess. Iron the Dalek on to the front of the shirt and the “song” on to the back of the shirt.

Set your iron to the cotton setting on your iron (or about 305 degrees) Preheat the area of the shirt you want to place your vinyl for about 3 seconds then place the heat transfer on the t-shirt with the right side facing up. Using medium pressure, iron the entire image for about 30 seconds, directly onto the carrier sheet, without any steam. After you finish, I like to flip my shirt over and iron for another 10 seconds from the back. Peel the carrier sheet off. If any parts of the image pull up when removing the carrier sheet, stop peeling and iron for a few more seconds in that spot.

My daughter loves her Dalek shirt and sings the Dalek version of Soft Kitty at least five times when she wears it!

I would make a firefighter shirt for my five year old. He wants to be a firefighter so bad. I might also make some t shirts for the fire department too for my son to give them.they are always so nice and let him see the trucks all the time.

I'm a huge fan of BBT too! I always love coming here and seeing what you are up to next. What a great idea. I have a friend who loves the other show. I'll have to share this with her!

I love soft kitty! But I have no idea what a Dalek is – I have never seen Dr. Who. I sure would love to get my hands on this machine though. Wish me luck! 🙂

This is so cute! When I first saw it I would have never guessed that you made it. I have no idea what either of them are as I've never seen either show, but so cute.

This creative idea could make a beautiful gift. The T-shirt is very cute, although I've seen only The Big Bang Theory but to combine the words from those two shows is really creative.

Oh I have been wanting a Cricut for so long! I love how you combined the two shows. I don't watch either, but my husband is a HUGE Dr. Who fan…perhaps too much so 🙂

Am I the only Cricut Explore Air owner who doesn't use her machine? I made just 1 project and it's just been sitting there collecting dust. I will have to bring it out and do some stuff over the weekend.

This all seemed so much easier when I used to help make signs with vinyl letters. For some reason, I seem to lose my touch when it comes to putting them on clothing. You did a great job!

I can't believe how easy it is to make this shirt. I've always sewed pretty well but never made clothes from scratch like this. I think I could probably do this.
