When we think of hygge, it’s usually connected to things like cozy winter nights, soft blankets, and candles or soft lighting, for example, but who says you can only enjoy hygge during the winter? You can have a hygge lifestyle at any time of the year, and that includes summer, even when it’s hot outside and cozy isn’t the word that immediately springs to mind. The fact is that hygge means finding joy and comfort in little things, and that’s something that works just as well in the summer months as it does in the winter, and it’s especially handy to bear in mind when you want to escape the heat and enjoy the simple pleasures of staying indoors. With that in mind, and if the thought of being outside in summer doesn’t exactly spark joy, here are some ways to enjoy hygge when it’s warmer and make your home the perfect place to be – read on to find out more.
Keep It Cool
The first thing to think about is making your home comfortable – you just can’t have hygge without comfort, after all. To do that, you’ve got to make sure your air conditioning system is working well and can do its job, otherwise you’ll be uncomfortable and too hot to really relax and (literally) chill out.
If things aren’t quite right, or if you just want your system to be checked over, booking an expert to carry out A/C repair is a wise idea because once you’re cooling situation is sorted out, you can then take some extra steps like putting up lightweight curtains to block out the sun or add some fans for a bit of extra airflow. In the end, your home should feel lovely and refreshing and not like a sauna – that’s what you should be aiming for!
Create A Cozy Corner
Hygge is all about creating inviting spaces where you can relax and recharge, which is something you’ll definitely want to do after being outside in summer, whether you were at work, playing with the kids, or enjoying the sun’s warmth (after applying plenty of sunscreen, obviously!), so why not set up a cozy, comfortable corner by a summer window to do that relaxing and recharging in (and if it overlooks some greenery, that’s even better, so choose your window wisely).
You won’t need much to make this spot comfy for you – it might be that there’s always a wide windowsill or window seat, which means you don’t have to worry about adding any extra furniture, but otherwise a nice chair is a good move. You might also want a small side table to place a drink and a book on, for example, and what about adding some fairy lights strung across the ceiling? Or how about a small plant to make the area a bit more cheerful? This is your little indoor retreat away from the summer sun and heat and insects and anything else that can both you outdoors, so make it exactly how you want it.
Bring Nature Indoors
We have mentioned putting a small plant in your cozy relaxation corner, and that’s a good idea for many reasons – in fact, you might want more than one plant if you’re aiming for a hygge space next summer. The fact is that bringing natural elements in boosts your mood and makes your home look and feel great, so it’s well worth thinking about.
Plants and flowers are probably the first thing you’ll think about, and a vase of bright flowers or some indoor house plants will be ideal. However, the word natural encompasses loads of different things, and some other ideas include having a fruit bowl on your table, showcasing your collection of seashells you picked up last time you were at the beach, or perhaps just picking furniture made from natural materials like wood, for example. When you expand the scope of what nature means, you’ll find there are lots of different options you can pick that will make your place feel comfortable and link to the hygge theme, even in summer.
Indulge In Summer Treats
We’ve discussed your decor and a few different ideas you can get started with (there are plenty more, of course), but don’t forget that food plays a big role in hygge, which is why you’ll also want to treat yourself to something that tastes like summer – and again, you’ve got a lot of options here.
You could make a pitcher of lemonade, for example, or snack on fresh berries, or if you want to bake something, bake a fruit tart using summer produce or a lemonade berry pie and enjoy it with a fresh iced tea. And when you eat, take things slowly – hygge is about savoring the moment and not rushing, so take your time and enjoy every bite.
