Tissue Paper Bookmarks

April 16, 2018 by Wifeeclectic 19 Comments

If there is one thing my kids are always losing, it is bookmarks. I have found everything from socks to bobby pins in their books to hold their places, Today, I am going to show you how to make easy and fun bookmarks with tissue paper!

Tissue Paper Bookmarks

You will need:

  • Cardstock
  • Tissue Paper in Various Colors
  • Ribbon
  • Cricut Maker (or another Cricut Machine)
  • Cricut Bright Pad
  • Mod Podge

To get started in the New Cricut Design Space, hit the plus sign on the left-hand side of your projects or the green New Project button in the top right corner.

After you select New Project, a blank canvas will open up for you. The canvas is a grid, so you will be able to see exactly how big your project is. Each of the little squares is an inch. For this simple and easy project, we will be adding a simple lightning bolt.

Uploading Your Own Photos to Design Space

  • To upload your own photo to Cricut Design space instead, hit the upload button at the bottom of the left-hand menu.   The following screen will pop up, hit the upload image button.

You can either drag and drop your file on the next screen or search for it on your computer by hitting the browse button.

Once you have selected your image, it will pop up in the box on the left-hand part of your screen.

Select what kind of image it is, a simple image is an image with high contrast colors and a transparent or blank background. A moderately complex image is one with simple details and color. A complex image is one with lost of details and low contrast. For instance, the lighting bolt below is a simple image because of the white background and the dark, simple lines.

  • The next screen will pop up, wanting your to erase any parts of your image that you don’t want in the final product. This is when you erase backgrounds and other objects. There are a couple of ways to do this. You can do it the magic wand (it looks like a plus sign on your screen) will try and select the parts you want to be selected and erased or you can use the eraser (it looks like a circle on your screen) which functions the same way the eraser tool in old-school paint did.

Save your image as a cut file and then insert it into your design. Resize your lighting bolt by grabbing the double arrow in the corner and clicking and dragging.

Make The Project

When your project, looks the way you want it, it the Make It button in the top right corner of the screen. Place your tissue paper on a well-worn mat (light grip works best)and load the mat into the machine. Set your machine to cut tissue paper and then allow your machine to cut your design.

When your machine is done, unload your mat and slowly peel each design off of the mat.

Cut strips of cardstock, two inches wide and punch a hole at the top of each one. Brush the back of each of your pieces of tissue paper with Mod Podge and then lay them down on the cardstock, smoothing out the bubbles. Add a piece of ribbon and you have a darling customized bookmark!

I have gotten together with some amazing other bloggers to show you what you can create with a tissue paper! Enjoy their projects below.

How cute is this! I always splurge on these cute and creative bookmarks from either Etsy or my local book stores but I ALWAYS end up misplacing them. Making my own would definitely save money and it would allow me to get creative.

This looks like such a fun project to do with the kiddos. I would have never thought that it would be so easy to make a bookmark at home.

This would make a perfect gift for page turners like me and my fellow book club members. I may have to make these to share with the group or better yet what a great project for our club.

Would never have guessed they were made out of tissue paper. Something I think the young girls would be interested in doing at our next get together. They turned out really pretty.

I would love to have a machine like this because there’s so many things I could do it! It would be a fun way to give teachers a great gift that is also honey. It’s also great for Christmas gifts. I could always use some bookmarks because I have like five books going right now and I usually just fold down the page.
