Trunk or Treats are becoming more and more popular as fewer parents want to send their children door to door on Halloween. My kids have grown up with Trunk or Treats, in our current location we usually go to my in laws trunk or treat and then take our children around our neighborhood on Halloween, so they get the best of both worlds.

Harry Potter Trunk or Treat Idea

My favorite part about Trunk or Treats is seeing the way each family decorates their car. This year we are truly getting into the Halloween spirit and joining in with the decorating. When Oriental Trading asked me if I wanted to partner on a post for Halloween, I jumped at the chance. I love how our Harry Potter trunk turned out and with the included printables and links, you will be able to make your own in a flash.

You will need:

  • a brick back drop (I used the one from Oriental Trading here)
  • pumpkins (I used faux ones from Oriental Trading)
  • fishing line
  • masking tape
  • a Harry Potter Robe (we used this one here)
  • Platform 9 3/4 printable at the end of this post
  • Hogwarts letters (found in this post)
  • Old books and birdcages

The brick backdrop truly made the whole trunk! I used masking tape to tape it to the top of the trunk and then let it cascade down the back of the trunk. I used the pumpkins to hold the backdrop into the back of the trunk a little better. You could use real pumpkins, but I LOVE these ones from Oriental Trading, they look amazing and we will be able to use them next year too. You can check out their Halloween selection here.

Print out the the Hogwarts envelops found in this post here. Tape fishing line on the inside of the envelope and then run the fishing line to the top of your open trunk and hang them from the top, so the letters look like they are floating.

Add other Harry Potter elements to including old books and maybe a birdcage. I just used what I had on hand. Ideas include broomsticks, stuffed owls or cats and potion bottles.

Make sure to leave a space for someone to sit on the back of the trunk to hand out the candy. My little Luna Lovegood is obsessed with her new Hogwarts robe. We have been looking for Ravenclaw robe everywhere but every where we looked we could only find Gryffindor. My Ravenclaw told me she wouldn’t be caught dead in a Gryffindor robe, so I was thrilled when we finally got our hands on a Ravenclaw one at Oriental Trading. Their costume selection is awesome.

The last thing you need to add to your trunk is a Hogwarts Express sign! I am so thrilled to share this one with you, it turned out even better than I had hoped. There are two different versions one with the Hogwarts logo and one without, so you can print your preference.

The sign has been designed to be printed as a 16×20. I printed my at my local club store and picked it up for about $5.  Download the sign below.

Would you ever make a Harry Potter Trunk for a Trunk or Treat?

This is so cute! We always did a trunk or treat when I lived in California and it was so fun to see how the different trunks were decorated. I think yours would definitely win a prize!
