No one in my family likes hard boiled eggs. Normally, this isn’t a problem at all, we just don’t make or eat them, but at Easter time, suddenly it becomes a huge problem. My kids want to decorate approximately 1 billion Easter eggs, but then we have absolutely no one who will eat them. Every year I find myself begging neighbors to take our hard boiled eggs and I end up just tossing most of them. I have hated the waste but I wasn’t exactly sure what to do about it. I didn’t want my kids to feel left out of a favorite tradition but I wanted to find a better way to do it.
Enter REESE’S Eggs. We have always adored these peanut buttery treats (seriously REESE’S are the best at Easter!), but two years ago my daughter made the comment that life would be so much easier if we could just decorate REESE’S Eggs. It was a complete light bulb moment for me. We didn’t have to keep decorating eggs that no one would eat! We could decorate one of our favorite treats with chocolate, frosting and sprinkles.
Ever since, we have decorated eggs of the chocolate variety and had a blast doing it. I usually buy a variety of REESE’S Stuffed with Pieces Eggs, Cadbury Crème Eggs and REESE’S 3D Eggs. The Cadbury Eggs and 3D REESE’S Eggs are more like decorating a real egg because of their shape, but I find the regular REESE’S Eggs are a bit easier for little kids to decorate because they don’t roll away when set on the table. So we do a little bit of both. You can find all of these candies at Walmart this Easter season.
DECORATE CHOCOLATE EGGS
You will need:
- REESE’S Peanut Butter Eggs or Cadbury Crème Eggs
- melting chocolate in different colors (we used white, blue, yellow, green, orange and red)
- toothpicks
- bowls and spoons for each chocolate color
- frosting and sprinkles (if desired)
Place a handful of chocolate in a microwave-safe dish and microwave the chocolate for 30 seconds. Stir the chocolate even though it is still very firm. Microwave it for another 30 seconds and then stir again. Repeat until your chocolate is completely melted. This usually takes about 90 seconds with my microwave.
Open your candy wrapper but leave your chocolate eggs on top of the wrappers. This will let your kids hold them in their hands without the chocolate melting. Use the toothpicks and spoons to decorate your eggs. I let my kids go crazy with polka dots, stripes and dipping the eggs.
They absolutely love it and there are no hard boiled eggs leftover after!

GRAHAM CRACKER EASTER BASKETS
While you have the chocolate out to decorate your eggs with, consider making graham cracker Easter baskets! They are just like a graham cracker Christmas house but with Easter candy! They are one of my kid’s favorite crafts/recipes to make at Easter and it is always fun to fill them up with goodies.
You will need:
- Graham Crackers
- Cadbury EGGS
- REESE’S Eggs and Cadbury Eggs
- Melted chocolate
- cardboard covered in tinfoil
Dip the ends of your graham crackers in melted chocolate and then secure onto your board.
DECORATE! My kids love to use the Cadbury eggs for decoration and then we fill the basket up with our favorite Easter candies!
CANDY EASTER BASKETS
Another one of our favorite Easter alternatives is to make Easter baskets out of candy! We don’t have to store anything all year long and the kids absolutely love it!
You will need:
- cardboard wrapped in tinfoil
- boxes of candy ( CADBURY Crème Eggs work perfectly!)
- hot glue
- a rope candy (we love using REESE’S Peanut Butter Cups Miniatures Easter Sleeves)
Hot glue your boxes of CADBURY Crème Eggs into a square on your cardboard.
Glue your REESE’S Peanut Butter Cups Miniatures Easter Sleeve over the top as the handle.
Fill the basket with all of your favorite Easter candies!
