If you are looking for a spooky and easy DIY Halloween decoration, then these Packing Tape Ghosts are perfect! They are so much fun to make and really need minimal materials. They are a great combination of scary and fun. I made ours for a photo opp with our Ghostbusters costumes, but they are great for decoration!
Packing Tape Ghosts
You will need:
- forms for your body and head (I used a dress form and a styrofoam head, both worked great!)
- plastic wrap
- scissors
- lights for the inside (with a battery pack if you don’t want your ghost to have to be plugged in)
- packing tape (lots and lots, every ghost needs about two rolls)
Start with your head. Wrap the entire thing in plastic wrap. Then wrap it over and over again with tape. Make sure to go slow and get the tape to conform to the details. With the head, it is easiest if you cut your tape into 6-8 inch strips and work with that. It is easier to form the details.
Repeat with your body. Wrap your entire form in plastic wrap. Then start wrapping the tape. The body worked best in 10-inch lengths for me, but I didn’t measure, just eyeballed it.

Wrap the entire form in tape. Then do it again. and then a third time. Make sure to get extra tape at the bottom. This will help your ghost be stable.
After you have wrapped your ghost, take scissors and slit the ghost up the entire back and pull it off of the form. Do the same for the head. For the head, line up the seams and use tape to tape it back together. I leave my dresses open in the back, because it makes it easier to stand the ghosts up.
Wrap the neck of the ghost body form around the base of the head and tape around it a full circle to make the body.

Add the lights up in the head of your ghost and then tape them around the inside of the body. Purple or blue lights work great for a ghostly effect.
