Basketball Cake
- Two 8-inch round cakes
- 1 54 OZ bag of Skittles (You can find the big bags at Sam’s Club)
- Frosting (Lemon Icing Recipe Below)
- 1/2 Cup of white vegetable shortening
- 4 C. Powdered Sugar
- 4 Tablespoons Water or Milk
- 1 teaspoon pure lemon extract
When I first started taking cake decorating classes three years ago, my eyes were opened to all of the things I was doing wrong when I baked a cake. The thing that shocked me the most was the idea of leveling your cakes. For some silly reason, it had never occurred to me to cut the dome off the top of the cake before. Once you have leveled your cake tiers, crumb coat the entire cake with a layer of icing. If I have time, I like to let my cakes sit over night before I add the final layer of frosting.
After you add your second layer of frosting, you are going to want to start adding Skittles to the cake pretty immediately to keep the frosting from setting.
Start with the basketball lines and make sure that you continue the lines down the side of the cake, not just on the top.
After your purple Skittles lines are set, fill in the rest of the cake with the orange Skittles.

That is such a great idea. I am not great at frosting and cake decorating so this would be perfect for me.

So cute! And I love that you don't have to be fabulous at cake decorating to make it! In college my husband and I were the ones with the sports package tickets so we went to lots of games.
This is ridiculously clever!! Love it so much!
So much fun!! I'm better at decorating with candy than icing, so this is perfection!
I am not a sports fan whatsoever! I certainly do love the way that cake looks. It would also be perfect for boys or girls basketball team celebration.
That cake is adorable! It's so perfect for March Madness. And I'm not going to lie, eating the remaining colors wouldn't be a problem for me.
This would be fun for a high school basketball team as an end of the year treat!
That's just almost too pretty to cut into. It's really, really adorable.
This is such a cute idea!! I love that adding skittles to the cake makes it look like the perfect basketball!
What a clever idea! I may have to give that a try. 😀
