Skittles Basketball Cake

Create a fun basketball cake using 2 different colors of skittles. The perfect treat to bring to a basketball party!

Basketball Cake

When my husband and I were in college, we never missed a school basketball game. We loved our school and we spent every game on our feet the whole time cheering for our team. We always went to the games with our best friends who loved the game just as much as we did. Over the years lots of different people would come to the games with the four of us, but never more than once. It took us a long time to figure out that not everybody loves sitting next to people who shout things like “take his whistle,” when the refs make a bad call.
Even though we are long past our college years, we still love to get together with our basketball loving friends every March to watch the tournament. This year, I have been trying out some fun recipes for our day long basketball extravaganza and this Skittles Basketball Cake is by far my favorite. I love that it is easy to pull together and while it does take some time, it does require any special cake decorating tools.
You will need:
  • Two 8-inch round cakes
  • 1 54 OZ bag of Skittles (You can find the big bags at Sam’s Club)
  • Frosting (Lemon Icing Recipe Below)
Lemon Icing:
  • 1/2 Cup of white vegetable shortening
  • 4 C. Powdered Sugar
  • 4 Tablespoons Water or Milk
  • 1 teaspoon pure lemon extract
Add all of the ingredients to your mixer and mix until a even consistency.

When I first started taking cake decorating classes three years ago, my eyes were opened to all of the things I was doing wrong when I baked a cake. The thing that shocked me the most was the idea of leveling your cakes. For some silly reason, it had never occurred to me to cut the dome off the top of the cake before. Once you have leveled your cake tiers, crumb coat the entire cake with a layer of icing. If I have time, I like to let my cakes sit over night before I add the final layer of frosting.

After you add your second layer of frosting, you are going to want to start adding Skittles to the cake pretty immediately to keep the frosting from setting.

Start with the basketball lines and make sure that you continue the lines down the side of the cake, not just on the top.

After your purple Skittles lines are set, fill in the rest of the cake with the orange Skittles.

In order to have enough orange Skittles to fill the entire cake, you will need the large 54 OZ bags of Skittles. I found mine at Sam’s Club.
When I was filling in my cake, I started in the middle and worked my way to edges, it seemed to help make sure that I could place the as many Skittles on the cake as possible, because you know March is only madness if you don’t have Skittles.

That is such a great idea. I am not great at frosting and cake decorating so this would be perfect for me.

So cute! And I love that you don't have to be fabulous at cake decorating to make it! In college my husband and I were the ones with the sports package tickets so we went to lots of games.

So much fun!! I'm better at decorating with candy than icing, so this is perfection!

I am not a sports fan whatsoever! I certainly do love the way that cake looks. It would also be perfect for boys or girls basketball team celebration.

That cake is adorable! It's so perfect for March Madness. And I'm not going to lie, eating the remaining colors wouldn't be a problem for me.
